While it may seem daunting to a beginner, you can create a lush garden on your balcony, or grow herbs and even tomatoes on your window sill.

PICK THE RIGHT SPOT

If you are lucky enough to have a terrace, that is ideal, but your deck will work well too. Ensure that you get five to six hours of direct sunlight and that the space is protected from strong winds that would destroy your budding plants and keep pollinators away. The space should be accessible so that you can water the plants without a problem, and care for them.

PLAN YOUR GARDEN

Do you want to grow some beautiful flowers? Would you like to pick some fresh herbs straight from the pot for your cooking? How about growing some veggies? Think about what you wish to do with the space and work towards that.

THE QUALITY OF SOIL

Soft, crumbly, nutrient-rich soil will yield the best results. If it is hard, rocky, or feels like clay, it will be difficult for the roots to grow. Improving the soil is worth the effort, and you don’t have to spend a fortune. Organic compost with tea leaves or vegetable peels can make all the difference.

GET YOUR TOOLS

Some basic gardening tools include

● Pruning scissors to cut dead bits and maintain the health of your plants.

● Digging tools – a spade, trowel, garden fork.

● Watering equipment such as a garden hose and watering can for more delicate plants.

● Weeding tools such as a forked trowel and a gardening knife.

LET YOUR GARDEN

BLOOM With the right care, you can grow fruits and veggies in the smallest spaces

CHOOSE YOUR PLANTS

Take time to study the conditions in which they will grow. Some plants need more sunlight than others. The seed packets will provide this information. It’s always best to grow plants that are native to your area, as these will give you the most satisfying results. Talk to your neighbours about the plants that they are growing. Begin with veggies such as tomatoes, chillies, herbs, salad leaves, radishes and capsicums, which are simpler to cultivate.

THE PLANTING PROCESS

Plan where each plant will go and ensure that each one has room to grow. Label your pots, lest you forget what you planted where. You could even create a scrapbook to track the progress of your plants – it will thrill and motivate you! Plant seeds, about three or four times as deep as the diameter of the seed (though do check the packaging for specific instructions). Ensure they are well covered with soil and water them thoroughly.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Water your plants slowly but be careful not to damage them through overwatering. At different stages, they will need different levels of water. Potted plants must have a hole for drainage; you can put a plate below to catch excess water. Use compost – and reduce your carbon footprint – by adding tea bags, peels and so on. Keep pests away with a homemade solution of neem oil, water and a few drops of dish soap – spray this on your plants once every two weeks. If it doesn’t work out, the first time, don’t fret – as gardening coach Janet Kilburn Phillips has pointed out: “There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments.” The beauty of nature is that it has an infinite capacity to rejuvenate itself!

With the right care, you can grow fruits and veggies
